A brief history

" The events that led to Wednesday’s raid are related to a double homicide in Bonanza last October.

Everado Mendez-Ceja, of Richmond, Calif., and Ricardo Jauregui, of Oakland, Calif., told their families they were headed to the Bonanza area to purchase horses and hay. In early October, Mendez-Ceja was reported missing by his family.

Meanwhile, near Bonanza, a burning pick-up truck belonging to Jauregui was found. Six miles away, two bodies were found shot.

Investigators determined the bodies belonged to Mendez-Ceja and Jauregui. As the Klamath County Major Crimes Team worked the case, it found that the two Bay Area men never intended to buy equine supplies; they came for drugs.

The case went cold for a few months and in the meantime a district attorney retired, the Oregon Department of Justice took over the office and a new sheriff was elected.

Then, about 80 days ago, the Klamath County Sheriff’s office and the Oregon Department of Justice began rebuilding the case. Grand juries were assembled and warrants were obtained. Evidence was found that led investigators to believe an organized group of criminals was storing and trafficking methamphetamine and guns through the area. The drugs are believed to be high-grade"
